My Chemical Romance have finally reached the top of the Billboard 200 with The Black Parade, nearly 20 years after the album’s original release. The 2006 rock landmark debuts at No. 1 for the first time with 78,000 equivalent album units, setting a new record for the longest wait an album has taken to reach the chart’s summit.
Originally released on October 23, 2006, through Reprise Records, The Black Parade debuted at No. 2 on the Billboard 200 and spent the following two decades cementing its status as one of the defining albums of the emo generation. Its long-awaited climb to No. 1 surpasses the previous record held by Toby Keith’s 35 Biggest Hits, which reached the top 15 years and nine months after its initial chart debut, following the country singer’s death in 2024.

The milestone arrives almost exactly 20 years after Gerard Way, Mikey Way, Ray Toro and Frank Iero introduced the world to the ambitious concept album. Built around the story of a terminally ill character known as The Patient, the 13-track record explored mortality, grief and the uncertainty surrounding death through a theatrical combination of alternative rock, punk and glam influences.
Produced by the band alongside Rob Cavallo, the album originally arrived with enormous expectations following the success of 2004’s Three Cheers for Sweet Revenge. Its lead single, “Welcome to the Black Parade,” became one of the group’s signature songs, while “Famous Last Words,” “I Don’t Love You” and “Teenagers” further established the project’s commercial reach. The album eventually earned four-times platinum certifications in the United States.
My Chemical Romance have been performing the album on the road since July 2025, with the tour scheduled to conclude on November 22 in Indonesia. Among its most notable stops was a five-night engagement at Los Angeles’ Hollywood Bowl last month, arriving as the record approached its 20th anniversary. A 20th-anniversary deluxe edition featuring the original album and selected bonus material has also contributed to the renewed attention surrounding the release.
The achievement makes My Chemical Romance the third act in 2026 to wait at least a decade between an album’s Billboard 200 debut and its first No. 1. The band’s journey from its first appearance with Three Cheers for Sweet Revenge on the June 26, 2004-dated chart to its first chart-topper spans 22 years and four months.
