Nirvana will receive the Video Vanguard Award at the 2026 MTV Video Music Awards, marking a major milestone for the legendary rock band and a rare return of the group’s name to the center of the VMAs. The honor makes Nirvana the first band in more than 20 years to receive the prestigious recognition.
The VMAs announced the news as part of this year’s ceremony, with Nirvana following Mariah Carey, who received the Video Vanguard Award in 2025. The group becomes the latest addition to a select list of artists whose influence has been recognized through one of the VMAs’ highest honors.

Nirvana’s selection is particularly significant because the award has not been presented to a band since Duran Duran in 2003. Other groups to receive the distinction include U2, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Beastie Boys, R.E.M., The Rolling Stones, Guns N’ Roses and The Beatles, putting Nirvana in a small group of bands whose music and visual legacy have been celebrated at the VMAs.
Formed in Aberdeen, Washington, in 1987 by Kurt Cobain and Krist Novoselic, Nirvana became one of the defining forces of the 1990s alternative-rock explosion. Dave Grohl joined the band as drummer in 1990, completing the lineup most closely associated with its mainstream breakthrough.
Their impact accelerated with Nevermind, released in 1991 through DGC Records. Led by “Smells Like Teen Spirit,” the album transformed Nirvana from a Seattle grunge act into a global phenomenon, helping push alternative rock into the mainstream. Nevermind has since been certified 13-times platinum in the United States.
Nirvana followed with the 1992 compilation Incesticide before releasing In Utero in 1993. The album topped both the U.S. and U.K. album charts and reinforced the band’s ability to balance abrasive punk influences with memorable melodies and deeply personal songwriting.
Nirvana’s career ended in April 1994 following Kurt Cobain’s death, but the band’s cultural influence continued through archival releases and the work of Novoselic, Grohl and Cobain’s widow, Courtney Love. MTV Unplugged in New York, released later in 1994, became one of the most enduring documents of the band’s career and won Best Alternative Music Performance at the 1996 Grammy Awards.
The group’s list of accolades has continued to grow decades after its breakup. Nirvana received seven MTV Video Music Awards during its active years, along with an American Music Award, Brit Award and Grammy Award. The band was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2014, its first year of eligibility, and received the Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award in 2023.
Their commercial footprint remains just as substantial. Nirvana has sold more than 75 million records worldwide, including 60 million certified sales in the United States, while Billboard history includes five No. 1s on the Alternative Songs chart and four No. 1 albums on the Billboard 200.
