The Latin star will receive the prestigious MTV’s Michael Jackson Video Vanguard Award at the upcoming MTV Video Music Awards on September 12th.
Bruce Gillmer, the executive producer of the VMAs, expressed, “Shakira is a true global force, continuing to inspire and influence the masses with her unique musical prowess.”
This achievement marks a historic milestone for Shakira, as she becomes the first-ever Latin artist in history to receive the esteemed VMA Video Vanguard Award.
The honor was initially introduced in 1984, with recipients like The Beatles, Richard Lester, and David Bowie. Over the years, this prestigious award has been bestowed upon iconic artists such as Madonna (1986), Michael Jackson (1988), and Britney Spears (2011). The most recent recipient of the VMA Video Vanguard Award was Nicki Minaj in 2022.
As mentioned, the MTV Video Music Awards 2023 will take place on September 12 at the Prudential Center in Newark, New Jersey. Taylor Swift leads the pack with 8 nods, while Shakira is the most nominated Latin Artist with four nominations.
