The Path to I Am Music

On Christmas Day 2020, Playboi Carti played Santa by dropping his second studio album, Whole Lotta Red. The project was a massive success, debuting at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 and becoming one of the most acclaimed hip-hop albums in recent history. Shortly after its release, Carti began teasing a new project, fueling excitement among fans. In August 2021, he announced an album titled Narcissist, slated for release on September 13, but the project never dropped. Fans didn’t receive any updates until spring 2022, when the rapper told XXL that he had changed the album’s title to Music. Between 2022 and 2023, Carti continued working on new material, exploring different sounds and genres. During that time, he performed several unreleased tracks at concerts, further building anticipation for his comeback. He also made guest appearances on songs like Travis Scott’s “Fein” and Future & Metro Boomin’s “Type Shit.” At the end of 2023, he shared a cryptic Instagram story revealing the updated title, I Am Music. In 2024, Carti continued teasing the album, suggesting it would drop before the year’s end—but once again, no release came. However, for his 29th birthday, he finally broke the silence with “All Red,” his first solo single in four years. He also collaborated with The Weeknd on the hit track “Timeless.” Then, last week, Carti announced that the album was officially finished. After several teasers from Spotify, he confirmed that I Am Music will be released this Friday—just in time for his set at Rolling Loud this weekend.
