Rihanna has sent fans into a frenzy by updating her social media profile picture and header with the titles of her albums. While many immediately speculated about long-awaited new music, the update is actually part of a celebration: 20 years since the release of her debut album Music of the Sun.
The campaign, marked by the hashtag #R20, honors Rihanna’s two-decade impact on music and pop culture. To commemorate the milestone, she announced a new line of anniversary merch dropping Friday, giving fans a chance to relive the era that launched her career.

Released in August 2005, Music of the Sun introduced Rihanna’s Caribbean-infused sound to the world. The album debuted at No. 10 on the Billboard 200, earned Platinum certification in the U.S., and produced breakout hits like “Pon de Replay” and “If It’s Lovin’ That You Want.”
Looking back, Music of the Sun was just the first step in a career that would eventually produce nine Grammy Awards, 14 Billboard Hot 100 No. 1 hits, and a catalog of albums that have shaped 21st-century pop.
Of course, no Rihanna news comes without speculation about her long-delayed ninth studio album, dubbed R9. The most recent update arrived at the 2025 Met Gala, when Rihanna announced her third pregnancy, but assured fans her pregnancy will not delay the record. Earlier this year, she revealed to Harper’s BAZAAR that the project has been in the works for eight years and will be unlike anything her audience expects: “It’s not going to be commercial or radio digestible. I feel like I’ve finally cracked it.”
