Selena Gomez recently appeared on Hot Ones, where she reflected on the overwhelming success of her 2019 hit “Lose You to Love Me.” The emotional ballad, which became her first No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100, resonated deeply with listeners worldwide—but she never expected it to become her biggest hit.

I thought the song was going to be, hopefully, relatable and beautiful and honest, but I did not expect it to do what it did,” Selena shared during the interview. “It was much bigger than me and had nothing to do with what it actually meant. It ended up being a song for people who felt the way I felt and maybe turned it into another version that suited them. It was really powerful to me, and I think that’s something I’ll always remember.”

Released as the lead single from her third studio album, Rare, “Lose You to Love Me” was widely praised for its raw vulnerability and deeply personal lyrics. The song, co-written by Selena alongside Julia Michaels, Justin Tranter, and Finneas, details the journey of self-discovery after heartbreak. Beyond its commercial success, “Lose You to Love Me” became an anthem of healing and empowerment.

Since then, much has changed for Selena. The pop superstar released her first Spanish-language project, Revelación, in 2021, and is now gearing up to launch I Said I Love You First, a joint album with her fiancé Benny Blanco. The record drops tonight and was preceded by the singles “Scared of Loving You,” “Call Me When You Break Up,” and “Sunset Blvd.”
