Shawn Mendes is celebrating 10 years of Illuminate with a newly expanded anniversary edition of the album, released Friday, September 25, across streaming platforms and vinyl. The milestone arrives as the 2016 record continues to find new life, with several of its biggest songs reaching fresh streaming and chart milestones a decade after their original release.
Originally released in 2016, Illuminate became a defining chapter in Shawn Mendes’ early career, producing hits including “Treat You Better,” “Mercy,” “Ruin” and “There’s Nothing Holdin’ Me Back.” The album has now been certified 3x Platinum by the RIAA, while its individual songs have continued to generate major activity in 2026.

“Treat You Better” recently reached 9x Platinum status in the U.S. after experiencing a renewed viral moment and generating more than 25 million TikTok creates. The song returned to the Billboard Global 200 at No. 62 and reached No. 37 on the Global Excl. U.S. chart this year. On Spotify, it spent 150 consecutive days on the Global chart and reached a new peak of No. 17 in 2026.
“There’s Nothing Holdin’ Me Back” has also picked up a new 9x Platinum RIAA certification. The track climbed to No. 111 on the Billboard Global 200 and No. 88 on the Global Excl. U.S. chart, where it has now accumulated 114 weeks. “Mercy,” meanwhile, has been certified 6x Platinum.
The Illuminate (10th Anniversary Edition) expands the original album with previously unreleased material from the 2016 sessions. Three different versions are part of the anniversary campaign, with each offering a previously unheard demo: “She’ll Be The One” on the limited Blood Records vinyl, “Cold in California” on the DSP edition and “What If I Told You A Story” on the direct-to-consumer edition available through Shawn Mendes’ store.
All three versions also include three live performances of “Treat You Better,” “Ruin” and “Mercy,” recorded during Mendes’ sold-out 2025 On The Road Again tour in New York, Boston and Montreal. The “Cold in California” release is accompanied by an official lyric video.
Shawn Mendes began teasing the anniversary project on September 16, exactly 10 years after the Illuminate tracklist was first revealed to fans. The rollout continued with cryptic billboards featuring lyrics from the previously unreleased “Cold in California” before the song was officially identified on September 23, the 10th anniversary of the album itself.
The celebration also extended beyond streaming platforms. On release night, Shawn Mendes partnered with Gucci at the brand’s Monte Napoleone flagship in Milan, where he surprised 100 fans with an intimate performance of songs from Illuminate.
