Olivia Rodrigo has officially announced her new single “Drop Dead,” set for release on April 17, marking the first official preview of her upcoming third album You Seem Pretty Sad for a Girl So in Love. The reveal arrived via Instagram and X, where Rodrigo paired the announcement with a playful visual tied to the era’s emerging pink aesthetic.
In the post, Rodrigo is seen blowing a bubblegum bubble while wearing a shirt embroidered with the song’s title, reinforcing the campaign’s cohesive visual identity. “‘Drop Dead,’ the first single from my new album, is out April 17!!!,” she wrote, confirming that pre-saves are now live alongside themed physical editions, including a “chewing gum” pink vinyl, CD, and cassette. The song will be released alongside a karaoke version. Furthermore, it is very likely that a music video will also be released together with the song.
Speculation around the release had been building for weeks. Leading up to the announcement, Rodrigo placed pink padlocks in cities including London, Paris, and Los Angeles. When decoded, the installations pointed to “April 17th drop dead,” effectively confirming both the title and release date ahead of the official reveal. The rollout aligns with a broader strategy that has included an Instagram wipe on April 1 and evolving murals across Los Angeles tied to the album’s branding.
“Drop Dead” serves as the lead single from You Seem Pretty Sad for a Girl So in Love, scheduled for June 12 via Geffen Records. The project follows 2023’s GUTS, which debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 with 302,000 first-week units and topped charts in 15 countries. Every track from its standard edition landed inside the Billboard Hot 100’s top 40, led by the No. 1 single “Vampire,” while “Bad Idea Right?” and “Get Him Back!” extended the album’s reach.
Awards recognition quickly followed. GUTS earned nominations for Album of the Year and Best Pop Vocal Album at the 66th Annual Grammy Awards, reinforcing Rodrigo’s standing as one of pop’s defining voices. The era translated into major touring success as well, with the Guts World Tour grossing over $209 million across 101 shows between 2024 and 2025, alongside a Netflix concert film documenting her Los Angeles performances.
