Tate McRae is still processing what may be one of the most surreal milestones of her career: receiving public praise from Taylor Swift. In a new interview with Rolling Stone, the Canadian pop star reflected on the moment she discovered that the world’s biggest artist had been listening to her music on repeat. Speaking with a mix of disbelief and gratitude, McRae revealed that the shoutout felt almost predestined.
“My mom is so witchy,” she said, laughing. “She said the week before, ‘I feel like Taylor Swift is in your ether right now.’ And I was like, ‘What? That’s so random.’ I’m such a massive fan, and I adore her. So when I pulled up my phone and saw that she had talked about it, it was one of the coolest moments ever.” McRae added that Swift has long been an inspiration “as a writer and as a woman in the industry,” making the acknowledgment “really special.”
Swift’s praise dates back to October, when she appeared on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon and told viewers that McRae’s viral hit “Tit For Tat” had become her current obsession. “I have it full volume, over and over again, on repeat,” Swift said, urging audiences to hear the track for themselves.
Days later, Swift doubled down during a promotional interview for The Life of a Showgirl, naming McRae among the three artists she was “constantly streaming” at the moment. For McRae, the repeated recognition came at a pinnacle point in her career. “Tit For Tat” had just debuted at No. 3 on the Billboard Hot 100, marking her highest solo entry yet.
The momentum follows a remarkable two-year streak. McRae’s 2024 breakthrough album Think Later produced global hits like “Greedy” and “Exes,” while her 2025 LP So Close to What became her first chart-topping project, spawning fan favorites such as “Sports Car” and “Revolving Door.” She recently wrapped her biggest tour to date, the Miss Possessive Tour, before releasing the deluxe edition of So Close to What, which added the successful single “Nobody’s Girl.”
