Taylor Swift announced the release after a week of increasingly elaborate clues across her website, social media and streaming platforms. The surprise project also gives fans new material just days before Swift’s appearance at the 2026 MTV Video Music Awards on September 27.

The pop superstar described the additional music as a product of gratitude following the extraordinary response to The Life of a Showgirl. According to her announcement, the songs were written after she reunited with Max Martin and Shellback in Sweden to celebrate the album’s success.
Why Is Taylor Swift Releasing Four New Songs?
The Encore came from what was initially intended to be a celebration. Taylor Swift said that about a year after fans gave The Life of a Showgirl what she described as the biggest first week for an album in history, she traveled to Sweden with Martin and Shellback.
The collaborators were there to reflect on the moment, but a studio was available and the session quickly became another creative opportunity. The “Opalite” hitmaker explained that they “did what we do when we feel anything at all: We wrote more songs.”
Those sessions ultimately produced the four tracks being released as The Life of a Showgirl: The Encore. Rather than presenting them as leftovers or archival material, Swift has framed the songs as music born directly from the excitement surrounding the original album.
That makes the release an unusual extension of an already established album era: four new tracks, arriving less than a year after the original project and directly connected to the collaborators behind it.
When Does The Encore Come Out?
The Life of a Showgirl: The Encore will be released on Friday, September 25, 2026.
The release follows the September 22 announcement of “Patient Zero,” which emerged after a mysterious countdown on Swift’s official website reached zero. The single is the first track from the expanded project to be formally introduced to fans.
Its arrival also creates an unusually compressed rollout. The Encore lands just two days before the MTV Video Music Awards, where Swift is scheduled to receive the inaugural Artist Director Award.
What Is “Patient Zero”?
“Patient Zero” is the first song from The Encore and the centerpiece of its initial rollout. Taylor Swift revealed the title on September 22 after several days of clues sent fans searching for connections across her digital platforms.
The mystery began with a third page appearing beneath the May 2025 masters letter on Swift’s website. The page was initially visible only at the edge of the existing image, leaving its contents unknown.
Taylor Swift then changed her social media bio to “And, baby, that’s sh0w business f0r y0u,” replacing two instances of the letter “o” with zeros. The same stylized substitution appeared in the Apple Music lyrics for “The Life of a Showgirl,” adding another piece to the puzzle.
The website countdown ultimately revealed “Patient Zero,” which Swift announced as a brand-new single arriving September 25.
Who Stars in the “Patient Zero” Music Video?
Taylor Swift has already given fans a first look at the “Patient Zero” music video. A cinematic teaser released September 24 features Swift alongside actors Colin Farrell and Dakota Johnson.
The preview moves between several visually stark settings, including a bathroom, an underwater sequence and a snowy cemetery. The teaser deliberately keeps the song itself largely out of focus, building the visual world before ending with a title card announcing the full video’s premiere at the MTV VMAs.
The video will therefore debut on September 27, only two days after The Encore arrives. Its placement at the VMAs gives “Patient Zero” a major live television launch immediately after the song’s release.
