Taylor Swift is adding another layer to the rollout of “Patient Zero,” revealing a cinematic teaser for the song’s upcoming music video with Colin Farrell and Dakota Johnson. Released September 24, the preview arrives one day before the single and its four-track expansion, The Life of a Showgirl: The Encore.
The teaser moves through a series of striking settings, including a stark bathroom, an underwater sequence and a snowy cemetery, with Swift, Farrell and Johnson appearing throughout. Rather than revealing the song itself, the short preview leans into atmosphere and mystery before ending with a title card announcing that the full “Patient Zero” music video will premiere at the 2026 MTV Video Music Awards on September 27.

Taylor Swift first announced “Patient Zero” on September 22 after a mysterious countdown on her official website reached zero. The reveal followed several days of clues, including a new page added to her website, an altered social media bio and changes to the Apple Music lyrics for “The Life of a Showgirl,” all of which fueled speculation about what she was preparing to release.
The song is now confirmed as the lead track from The Life of a Showgirl: The Encore, a four-song expansion of Swift’s 2025 album. Alongside “Patient Zero,” the release features “Cleveland!,” “Pink Clouding” and “Babylon,” with the complete project arriving Friday, Sept. 25.
Taylor Swift framed the bonus material as the result of a creative reunion with Max Martin and Shellback. About a year after The Life of a Showgirl generated the biggest first week for an album in history, Swift traveled to Sweden with the two collaborators to celebrate the album’s success. The trip eventually turned into another studio session, producing the four songs now being released as The Encore.
“Patient Zero” has already received a collector-focused physical rollout. Taylor Swift’s official store offered three limited CD editions of the single, including standard, acoustic and piano versions, each featuring different previously unseen photographs. The $3.99 editions were restricted to one per customer and were available only for a limited ordering window.
The timing of the video premiere puts Taylor Swift at the center of one of the biggest music weeks of the year. The Life of a Showgirl: The Encore arrives just two days before the MTV VMAs, where Swift is scheduled to receive the inaugural Artist Director Award and enters the ceremony with 11 nominations.
