As Young Thug celebrates the release of his long-awaited fourth studio album UY Scuti, the Atlanta rapper is also opening up about one of the most personal questions surrounding his life: his relationship with former collaborator Gunna.
In a new conversation on the Its Up There Podcast, Thug reflected on why the two, once inseparable, have not reconciled since his release from prison in late 2024. “I’m not gonna be able to look at you the same no matter what,” Thug admitted. “We can go get a trillion dollars together, I’m still not gonna be able to look at you the way I looked at you before we went to jail.”
The rapper stressed that the distance between them does not come from hate, but from changed perspectives. “We love each other to death, we’re just going our own ways,” he added. “You know how this sh*t goes, sometimes you do that.”

Young Thug and Gunna were once at the forefront of Atlanta’s new generation of hip-hop, frequently collaborating on hits like “Hot” and “Ski.” Their dynamic defined a sound and era of YSL Records. But their friendship was tested during Thug’s high-profile legal battles, which saw Gunna take a plea deal in the sprawling YSL RICO case.
These revelations follow Thug’s recent appearance on The Pivot Podcast earlier this week, where he reflected on how rap beefs have fractured the sense of community he once thrived in. Pointing to the collaborative energy behind his 2019 chart-topping album So Much Fun, Thug said the current landscape makes it harder to recreate that joy. “I can’t even have that type of fun no more, because a lot of the rap n****s that’s your friends, a lot of them beefing with each other,” he explained. During the same interview, Thug highlighted Drake’s support after his jail phone calls leaked publicly, calling him “a real one” for reaching out.
Despite personal challenges, Young Thug recently made his highly anticipated return. On September 26, he released UY Scuti through YSL Records, Atlantic Records, and 300 Entertainment. The 18-track album features collaborations with Cardi B, Travis Scott, Future, 21 Savage, T.I., Sexyy Red, Ken Carson, and YFN Lucci.
