Ariana Grande delivered another surprise during the Eternal Sunshine Tour on Thursday night (July 16), inviting Ty Dolla $ign to the stage at Brooklyn’s Barclays Center for a live performance of their fan-favorite collaboration “Safety Net.” The unexpected reunion marked the first time the pair have performed the song together during the current tour.
“Safety Net,” originally featured on Grande’s 2020 album Positions, has been a staple of Act III of the Eternal Sunshine Tour setlist. This time, however, fans were treated to something different when Ty Dolla $ign emerged from a door built into the tour’s house-shaped stage set.
The duo performed the song’s emotional chorus together, singing, “Tripping, falling, with no safety net,” before Ty Dolla $ign exited the stage. Before leaving, he addressed the crowd by thanking Grande and calling her “the queen, Ari,” drawing another loud reaction from the audience. Grande then seamlessly transitioned into “One Last Time,” one of the biggest hits from her 2014 album My Everything.
Later in the show, the pop superstar told concertgoers that Brooklyn had been the loudest audience she had experienced on the tour so far. The Barclays Center residency continues with two additional performances scheduled for July 18 and July 19.
Released as part of Positions in October 2020, “Safety Net” marked the first official collaboration between Grande and Ty Dolla $ign. Although it was never released as a single, the track debuted at No. 52 on the Billboard Hot 100 following the album’s arrival and quickly became a favorite among fans.
The guest appearance continues a week filled with memorable moments on the Eternal Sunshine Tour. During her July 13 Brooklyn concert, Grande once again changed the lyrics to “thank u, next,” referencing Ricky Alvarez for the third different time since the tour began. The lyric variations have fueled widespread discussion online, especially after Alvarez attended one of her Austin shows and later celebrated her birthday alongside friends and family.
Momentum surrounding Grande remains exceptionally strong as she prepares to release her seventh studio album, Petal, on July 31. Lead single “hate that i made you love me” debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100, becoming her 10th career chart-topper.
