Billie Eilish has added another historic achievement to her career. Her acclaimed debut album WHEN WE ALL FALL ASLEEP, WHERE DO WE GO? has officially surpassed 14 billion streams on Spotify, becoming the first project in her catalog to reach the milestone.
The achievement places Eilish in an exclusive club. She is now just the fifth female artist to have an album exceed 14 billion Spotify streams, joining Taylor Swift, Dua Lipa, SZA and Olivia Rodrigo. Rodrigo currently holds the record for the most-streamed female album on the platform, with SOUR standing at approximately 17.6 billion streams. Dua Lipa remains the only woman to accomplish the feat with two different albums, as both her self-titled debut (15.4 billion) and Future Nostalgia (15.5 billion) have crossed the mark. Taylor Swift’s Lover and SZA’s SOS round out the list.
Released on March 29, 2019, WHEN WE ALL FALL ASLEEP, WHERE DO WE GO? transformed Billie Eilish from a rising star into one of pop’s defining voices. Written alongside her brother and longtime collaborator FINNEAS in his bedroom studio in Highland Park, Los Angeles, the album blended electropop, avant-pop and industrial influences while exploring themes of mental health, nightmares, heartbreak and adolescence.
The era produced a remarkable string of global hits. Singles including “you should see me in a crown,” “when the party’s over,” “bury a friend” and the chart-dominating “bad guy” helped the album become a worldwide commercial phenomenon, reaching No. 1 in multiple countries and establishing Billie Eilish as one of music’s biggest new stars.
Critical acclaim followed just as quickly. At the 62nd Grammy Awards, the album won Album of the Year, Best Pop Vocal Album and Best Engineered Album, Non-Classical, while “bad guy” claimed both Record of the Year and Song of the Year. Eilish also received Best New Artist, making her the first woman and only the second artist after Christopher Cross to sweep the four General Field categories in a single ceremony.
More than six years after its release, the album continues to attract millions of listeners every week, demonstrating remarkable longevity in the streaming era. Crossing 14 billion Spotify streams further cements WHEN WE ALL FALL ASLEEP, WHERE DO WE GO? as one of the defining pop albums of the decade and another landmark in Billie Eilish’s already extraordinary career.
