In recent years, Kali Uchis has established herself as one of the most eclectic artists in the music industry. Born Karly Marina Loaiza, she has several hits under her belt, such as “Telepatía” and “Moonlight.” Her second album, “Sin Miedo (del Amor y Otros Demonios),” earned a Grammy nomination for Best Música Urbana Album. During her teenage years, Kali Uchis faced significant challenges. She lived with her mother and her older siblings. She often skipped class to spend time learning photography, design, and video editing, which led to a turbulent relationship with her family. This situation eventually led to her being kicked out of her house.

Living Out of Her Car

With nowhere to stay, Kali Uchis found herself living out of her car for several months. This period of homelessness was marked by instability and uncertainty. Despite these hardships, she remained determined to pursue her passion for music and art. She utilized her car as a temporary home, which also doubled as her creative space where she worked on her music and wrote songs that eventually appeared on her debut mixtape, “Drunken Babble” (2012). Initially, Kali aimed to write poetry and wasn’t attracted to the idea of singing, being more interested in directing films. During that period, she adopted the nickname Karluchis before turning into Kali Uchis.

Various Jobs

To support herself, Kali took on multiple jobs. She worked at Whole Foods, among other places, which provided her with the necessary income to survive while she continued to work on her music. It wasn’t easy at the beginning, but those jobs were crucial in allowing her to fund her early music projects and sustain herself during this challenging time.

DIY Music Production

Even while facing such difficulties, Kali recorded songs using whatever resources she could find and released her debut mixtape, “Drunken Babble,” in 2012. This mixtape, created with minimal equipment and in less-than-ideal circumstances, was a mix of various genres, reflecting her diverse influences and unique artistic vision. The project was released independently and was written, produced, and recorded in 48 hours using GarageBand. A few weeks ago, after 12 years since the mixtape’s release, Kali re-recorded and released “Never Be Yours” as fans were eager to listen to the song.
