Fifth Harmony, one of the most successful girl groups of the past decade, captured the hearts of millions with their powerhouse vocals, catchy hits, and undeniable charisma. Formed on the second season of “The X Factor USA” in 2012, the group initially consisted of Ally Brooke, Normani Kordei, Dinah Jane, Lauren Jauregui, and Camila Cabello. They quickly rose to fame with hits like “Worth It” and “Work from Home,” but their journey wasn’t without its challenges. In 2018, the group announced an indefinite hiatus, leaving fans wondering why.

Rise to Fame
Fifth Harmony’s debut EP, Better Together (2013), laid the foundation for their future success. The group’s first major hit, “Miss Movin’ On,” showcased their vocal prowess and harmonious blend. However, it was their debut album, Reflection (2015), that truly put them on the map. Driven by the hit single “Worth It,” the album was a commercial success and established Fifth Harmony as a force in the music industry.
Their follow-up album, 7/27 (2016), further solidified their place in pop culture. Named after the date they were formed on “The X Factor,” the album included hits like “Work from Home,” “All in My Head (Flex),” and “That’s My Girl.” “Work from Home,” in particular, became a smash hit, reaching the top 10 in several countries and earning multi-platinum certifications.
Camila Cabello’s Departure
In December 2016, Camila Cabello announced her departure from Fifth Harmony to pursue a solo career. The announcement was met with shock and sadness from fans, but it wasn’t entirely unexpected. Rumors of tension within the group had been circulating, and Camila’s solo projects hinted at her desire to explore new artistic avenues. Her departure left a significant void, as she had been a central figure in the group’s success.
Post-Cabello Era and Hiatus
Following Camila’s exit, Fifth Harmony continued as a quartet and released their self-titled album in 2017. The album featured singles like “Down,” “He Like That,” and “Angel,” showcasing their ability to adapt and thrive despite the lineup change. However, behind the scenes, the pressures of fame and the demands of the music industry were taking a toll. In March 2018, Fifth Harmony announced that they would be going on an indefinite hiatus to allow each member to pursue solo projects. In a heartfelt statement, the group expressed gratitude to their fans and explained that the hiatus was necessary for their growth as individuals and artists.
Reasons for the Hiatus
Several factors contributed to Fifth Harmony’s decision to go on hiatus. As the members grew older and developed their own artistic identities, creative differences became more pronounced. Furthermore, Fifth Harmony were very active between 2014 and 2018. Years of relentless touring, recording, and promotional activities took a physical and emotional toll on the group. The demanding schedule left little time for rest, leading to burnout. Meanwhile, the desire to pursue solo careers developed in each member, especially after Camila’s departure.
Moving Forward
Since the hiatus, each member of Fifth Harmony has embarked on solo endeavors. Camila has released four albums, with the latest being C,XOXO. After years of anticipation, Normani’s debut album, Dopamine, finally saw the light in 2024. Lauren, Ally, and Dinah have also released solo projects.
