Why did you choose Blvckhndz as your stage name and what does this name mean to you?

I chose the name BLVCKHNDZ because this group of white kids would make fun of me and call me that. I was the only black kid around some times. They called this other dude, SHADOW. Shit was weird. I decided to take the insult and make it my own. I stopped giving it power and started making fun. The name stuck and here we are today.

Can you tell us about your new EP “no one felt like they belonged”?

The new EP is probably some of my best work in my opinion. It started off completely different sonically. I intended it to be an indie rock/ hip hop album but it turned into something better. It’s a project that’s partially about my old love life. I felt like it would resonate with a huge group of people. Since the majority of us have been played, betrayed, lead on, and forgotten about at one point in our lives.

What is the meaning behind this project?

The meaning behind this project is to embrace love, lust, and attraction because it’s all a part of life. Even the bad parts. We learn from them and grow as people. It was honestly just supposed to be therapeutic for me.

What is your favorite song from the EP and why?

I’d say my favorite song would be “wimbledon”. I love the drum patterns that I created. I think my production was top tier in this one. The chord progression and melodies sit well with me. It makes me want to dance.

So, what’s next for you musically? Can we expect any new music soon?

Honestly, I’m not sure. I’ve been doing a lot of shows and just planned and executed a music and arts festival called Kinship NFK. I’ve been studying bass and guitar lately and I want to play more guitar on tracks like I did with “just friends”. I enjoy switching things up and I don’t really like samples. I want to play more instruments live. I want to add more depth to my live shows. My goal is to be better than what I am now. Always striving to learn, practice, and get uncomfortable.

What is a message you would like to give through your music and why?

I don’t really know. I just wanted people to be able to resonate with what I’ve had going on in my life. If anything, I want people to be comfortable with being vulnerable. I want people to their true selves. Which is something I do with my music most of the time.

Write here something you want to let people know.

I want everyone to know that creating art is super therapeutic. It makes you feel great when you’re getting a bunch of stuff off your chest. Bottling it up can be counterproductive. So go out and find that release that helps you cope. I don’t know. I think good mental health is cute.
