Daniel Caesar has never been afraid to bare his soul, but on his new album Son of Spergy — released via Republic Records — the Toronto-born artist reaches a level of vulnerability and reflection that feels unlike anything he’s done before. The record follows his 2023 album Never Enough, which landed in the Top 15 of the Billboard 200, and marks a profound step forward, particularly in its emotional depth.
Over the course of its lush, introspective 12 tracks, Son of Spergy finds Caesar revisiting the relationships that have shaped him — especially the one with his father, Norwill Simmonds. It’s an album about forgiveness, understanding, and growth, seen through the lens of someone finally making peace with his past.
Recorded primarily in Jamaica, Son of Spergy features an impressive roster of collaborators — including Sampha, Blood Orange, Yebba, and even Caesar’s own father. Its sound blends warm gospel chords, atmospheric soul, and understated R&B textures. While the lyrics shine throughout the record, the album’s sound can feel somewhat repetitive and heavy, with few peaks across its songs.
