Jennie said that fans would understand her words—“It’s about completing myself as Jennie Ruby-Jane, for that to be a whole person”—once the album dropped, and she was right. Ruby doesn’t stick to a single genre; instead, it explores a variety of soundscapes, from rap and pop to funk and R&B. From this perspective, the album may not be the most cohesive, but it still stands as a solid body of work, with the 29-year-old singer effortlessly shifting between genres and showcasing her vocal prowess. “Experimental” might be the best word to sum up the album. It opens with a soft, lullaby-like melody (“Intro: Jane”), only to take a sharp turn with the second track, “Like Jennie,” an aggressive, beat-driven song where she fully flexes her rap skills. The contrast continues with “Start a War,” which shifts the mood once again. Quick note: “Twin” is a masterpiece!
Released via Columbia Records, Ruby was supported by four singles: “Mantra,” “Love Hangover,” “ExtraL,” and “Like Jennie.” The album also features collaborations with music heavyweights like Dua Lipa and Doechii.
Without further ado, here is InMusic’s ranking of all 15 tracks from Jennie’s debut album, Ruby.
