Global Citizen has canceled its 2026 Festival in New York City due to an extreme weather forecast expected to bring dangerous conditions to the region this weekend. The decision marks the first cancellation in the festival’s 14-year history, with organizers prioritizing the safety of tens of thousands of attendees, artists and production crews.
The festival was scheduled for Saturday, September 26, on the Great Lawn in Central Park, with gates opening at 2 p.m. and performances running from approximately 4 p.m. through 10 p.m. After consulting with the City of New York and NYC Parks, organizers determined that the forecast conditions would make it impossible to safely stage the event.

A strengthening September nor’easter was expected to bring 40–60 mph wind gusts, 1–4 inches of rain and coastal flooding across the New York City area. Those conditions presented particular challenges for an event requiring tens of thousands of people to gather outdoors alongside extensive staging, lighting, sound and other production equipment.
“Safety has to come first,” Global Citizen said in a statement announcing the cancellation. Organizers added that they had spent the week exploring multiple contingency plans, but ultimately determined that none would allow the festival to proceed safely.
The 2026 edition was set to be one of Global Citizen’s biggest musical events of the year, bringing together artists from hip-hop, rock, country, pop and K-pop. Ms. Lauryn Hill and Wyclef Jean were scheduled to mark the 30th anniversary of the Fugees’ The Score, while Lenny Kravitz, John Legend, Lainey Wilson, Shaboozey, TOMORROW X TOGETHER, Victoria Monét, YEONJUN and YOSHIKI were also on the bill. Alicia Keys & Friends were additionally announced for the event.
Hugh Jackman was scheduled to return as host for a 12th year, alongside appearances from Rachel Brosnahan, Gayle King, Bill Nye and Katie Couric. European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen was also expected to deliver a special address, while the festival was set to stream through platforms including YouTube, Apple Music and Amazon.
Unlike a traditional concert, Global Citizen Festival tickets were primarily earned by completing advocacy actions through the Global Citizen app. This year’s event was tied to campaigns surrounding education, smallholder farming and clean energy, with the festival timed to coincide with the UN General Assembly.
Despite the cancellation, Global Citizen said the campaign surrounding the festival had already generated 3.5 million actions over the previous six weeks. Those efforts unlocked $208.8 million in pledges expected to benefit more than 9.5 million people, while food prepared for the canceled event was planned for donation to New York City organizations.
Ticket holders were set to receive automatic refunds, and Global Citizen said it intends to return to Central Park in 2027.
