Tate McRae has sparked major conversation with the release of her new single “TIT FOR TAT,” a sharp, unapologetic track that appears to fire back at her ex-boyfriend, The Kid LAROI. The song dropped just hours before Laroi unveiled the video for his latest single “A Cold Play,” which many fans believe was directed at Tate.

The timing, paired with the lyrical content, has fueled speculation that the two are now locked in a very public back-and-forth through music. On “TIT FOR TAT,” McRae leaves little to the imagination, singing: “Let’s go song for song, let’s go back to back / Let’s go tit for tat, boy, you asked for that / That’s the best you got, where’s the good one at? / I was never ever as far away as you thought […] Fix your f-king self, kiss my a— for that.”

Listeners were quick to connect these lines to Laroi’s “A Cold Play,” in which he repeats the refrain: “Fix you, fix you, fix you, wish I could.” The mirroring of language has only intensified fan theories that the tracks are direct responses to one another.

Tate McRae wrote and recorded “TIT FOR TAT” earlier this month in Nashville. She had teased the title during several stops on her Miss Possessive Tour. The release now seems intentionally timed to coincide with Laroi’s rollout, adding further fuel to the fire.

The feud is notable not only for its lyrical jabs, but also because McRae and Laroi—who recently broke up—previously collaborated. The pair worked together on “I Know Love” from McRae’s album So Close To What, a song that, at the time, highlighted their creative chemistry and closeness.
