In a recent interview with British Vogue, Allen revealed that the entire album was recorded in just 16 days. The publication described the LP as “possibly Lily at the very peak of her powers: the gut-punch lyrics.”
West End Girl marks Allen’s first album since No Shame (2018), a deeply personal project that earned widespread acclaim for its emotional honesty and stripped-back production. That record explored themes of divorce, motherhood, identity, and recovery.
Before that, Allen’s discography had already cemented her as one of Britain’s sharpest pop voices. From the cheeky social commentary of Alright, Still (2006) to the introspective It’s Not Me, It’s You (2009) and the confident Sheezus (2014), she built a reputation for balancing humor and vulnerability in equal measure.
Since her last album, Allen’s presence in the music world has been minimal. Her most recent release was a feature on Benee’s “Plain” (2020), while her last solo single dates back to 2019. In recent years, she has shifted her focus toward acting, earning a Laurence Olivier Award nomination for her West End debut in 2:22 A Ghost Story and starring as Katurian in a revival of Martin McDonagh’s play The Pillowman at the Duke of York’s Theatre.
