First of all, My Face Hurts From Smiling marks Lizzo’s first project since her 2022 Grammy-nominated album Special. Following the album’s success, the 37-year-old artist took a brief hiatus from music, focusing on her mental health and personal growth. “I’m the happiest I’ve been in 10 months. The strange thing about depression is you don’t know you’re in it until you’re out of it,” she wrote in a heartfelt message to fans a few months ago. “I’m definitely not all the way as carefree as I used to be… but the dark cloud that followed me every day is finally clearing up. My smile reaches my eyes again and that’s a win. I thought my album was finished… but I gotta get some of these good vibes off in a banger real quick.”
She kept her word, releasing two singles in the first half of 2025: “Love in Real Life” and “Still Bad.” While fans were expecting an album announcement, the rapper had a surprise in store—and instead announced My Face Hurts From Smiling. The mixtape’s artwork features Lizzo beaming with her middle finger raised behind two yellow smiley faces. The 13-track project includes two standout collaborations: “Still Can’t Fuh” brings Lizzo and Doja Cat together for the first time, while “IRL” reunites Lizzo with SZA, following their 2023 remix of “Special.” A few days ago, SZA teased the track on Instagram, calling their studio time a “lil after-dinner session.” The remaining 11 tracks are solo efforts by Lizzo, including a freestyle titled “Yitty on Yo Tittys.”
