Lorde has opened up about the emotions behind her Lollapalooza 2026 headline performance, sharing a heartfelt message with fans the day after taking over Chicago’s Grant Park. Posting photos from the stage on Instagram, the singer reflected on self-doubt, the pressure she places on herself and the deeper meaning she now attaches to her music.
“Last night felt crazy, very out of body,” Lorde wrote, describing herself as “brutally hard” on herself and admitting that she “almost never” feels like she did good enough. She also revealed that she was dealing with dizziness in the heat and feeling physically unwell during the performance.
Her reflections quickly moved beyond the festival itself. Lorde recalled crying when she and her collaborators handed in Melodrama because she believed it was the best work she could do at the time, yet still felt that it was not good enough.
The memory became part of a broader realization about the relationship between her creative work and self-worth. Lorde explained that she has been thinking about how much of her life she has invested in music in an effort to feel worthy, seen, loved and connected to other people.
She said she has been reminding herself that her worth cannot be determined by “one performance or one album or one song.” Instead, she described her life as a “whole tapestry,” extending beyond her career to her private life, family, nature, personal practice, ancestors and animals.
That perspective took on particular meaning during Thursday night’s performance. Lorde described the Lollapalooza crowd as a “heaving organism of connection and love,” saying the experience reminded her that her work had brought her to the right place.
The July 30 headline set was a career-spanning showcase, moving from her 2013 debut Pure Heroine through Melodrama and Solar Power to 2025’s Virgin. She opened with an unreleased song before performing “Royals,” “Perfect Places,” “The Louvre,” “Hard Feelings,” “Supercut,” “Team” and “Ribs,” alongside a substantial selection from Virgin. Charli xcx also joined Lorde onstage for “Girl, so confusing (Remix),” creating one of the festival’s defining moments.
