Lorde is pushing boundaries with her highly anticipated fourth studio album, Virgin, set for release on June 27, 2025. In a new interview with Rolling Stone, the New Zealand artist revealed that the project will explore themes of identity, raw emotion, and personal evolution—featuring some of her most daring lyrics to date.
Speaking about one of the album’s standout lines—“You tasted my underwear”—Lorde explained her intention to challenge what’s typically heard in pop music. “It’s right on the edge of gross,” she said. “I often really try to hit this kind of gnarliness or grossness. I’ve never heard that in a song, you know? It felt like the right way to tell this whole chapter.”

In addition to its unfiltered honesty, Virgin also embraces fluidity and questions of gender identity. The album’s opening track includes the line: “Some days I’m a woman, some days I’m a man.” Lorde also shared a list of seven artifacts that inspired the LP, including her water bottle, 5 Gum, electronics, T-Rex tape, a box of written materials, black jeans and a shoelace belt, and Japanese cloths.
The upcoming album follows 2021’s Solar Power, marking a significant shift in both sound and subject matter. While Solar Power leaned into nature and introspection, Virgin appears to be a return to the boldness of her earlier work. Its lead single, “What Was That,” embraces a synth-pop style reminiscent of her sophomore album Melodrama.
