Mariah Carey has reignited speculation about the release of her long-discussed grunge album Someone’s Ugly Daughter, offering fans a cryptic hint during a Reddit interaction. Asked about the once-lost project, the singer suggested that its arrival may be closer than before, writing: “I get asked this about once a week and my answer is…#notyet (this is a hint!)”

The brief response immediately puts the spotlight back on one of the most fascinating unreleased chapters of Mariah Carey’s career. Recorded in the mid-1990s under the fictional band name Chick, Someone’s Ugly Daughter saw the pop superstar explore alternative rock and grunge, deliberately stepping away from the sound that had made her one of the defining vocalists of the decade.

Although the album was recorded and released in 1995 under Chick, Carey’s involvement has remained a source of fascination for fans. She wrote and recorded the original lead vocals but, for the commercially released version, her friend Clarissa Dane performed the vocals instead. Mariah Carey has never officially issued her own vocal version, leaving the recordings largely out of public reach and turning the project into a cult favorite among longtime listeners.

Interest intensified in September 2025, when Carey and SZA discussed the album during the debut episode of Apple Music’s Flowers interview series. SZA revealed that the two artists had been in the studio together the previous night, listening to the long-hidden recordings.

Earlier in 2026, Mariah Carey gave fans a more direct indication that an official release was possible during an interview with Variety. Asked about the album’s future, she confirmed her intention to make it available, while suggesting that the timing and arrangements were not entirely in her hands. “And I’m going to do it. I’m going to do it,” she said, adding that she needed to “wait a minute” before moving forward.

The new tease arrives as the pop icon revisits another complicated chapter of her discography. On October 30, Mariah Carey released Glitter (25th Anniversary Edition), featuring previously unreleased vocal recordings and new versions connected to the 2001 soundtrack. The expanded edition follows an October 17 remix of “Loverboy” featuring Da Brat, Ludacris, Shawnna and Twenty II, as well as a new version of “Didn’t Mean to Turn You On” with Rochelle Jordan.
