Olivia Rodrigo used her Saturday Night Live hosting debut to do far more than promote an album. On May 2, the pop star pulled double duty as host and musical guest on SNL’s 1,006th episode, premiering the live debut of her new ballad “Begged.”
Already riding the chart dominance of “Drop Dead,” which debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 on April 17, Rodrigo chose SNL not only to showcase her blockbuster lead single but to unveil previously unheard material from you seem pretty sad for a girl so in love, due June 12.
Rodrigo’s monologue immediately leaned into self-awareness. Referencing her Disney beginnings on Bizaardvark, joking about Jake Paul as an “acting legend,” and parodying “drivers license” through a new DMV-themed “Real ID” song, she set the tone early: playful, controlled, and surprisingly confident for a first-time host.
Across the night’s sketches, she proved equally agile. From the melodramatic soap spoof “Edge of Destiny” to the innuendo-heavy “Shop TV: Lava Cake” and the awkward jealousy spiral of “My Ex,” Rodrigo avoided the stiffness that often shadows musicians-turned-hosts.
Musically, however, the night belonged to her second performance.
After an explosive rendition of “Drop Dead” introduced by Debbie Harry, Rodrigo returned later for “Begged,” a stripped-back, emotionally bruised ballad introduced by Heated Rivalry actor Connor Storrie. Backed by a band featuring Weyes Blood, Rodrigo traded the jagged sarcasm of her lead single for something more exposed. The performance leaned into restraint, allowing her voice to carry the weight of the song’s emotional collapse.
The appearance arrived just days after Rodrigo announced The Unraveled Tour, her 65-date global arena run beginning September 25 in Hartford, Connecticut.
