Selena Gomez is setting the record straight after fans speculated that a recent Instagram comment under a post featuring Taylor Swift at the NBA Finals was aimed at her longtime friend.
The singer and actress took to her Instagram Stories to address the growing online discussion, making it clear that her “lol” comment had nothing to do with Swift and was never intended as an insult.
The controversy began after MTV shared photos of Swift celebrating courtside during Game 4 of the 2026 NBA Finals between the New York Knicks and the San Antonio Spurs. Swift attended the game alongside actress Mariska Hargitay and friends as the Knicks completed a stunning 29-point comeback victory over the Spurs.
Gomez, a well-known Spurs supporter, commented “lol” under the post. The brief response quickly sparked speculation online, particularly because she had previously shared — and later deleted — an Instagram Story that read, “so funny how some are all the sudden fans though lol,” prompting some fans to wonder whether she was referencing Swift or other celebrity attendees.
As the conversation gained traction, Gomez addressed the situation directly. “woke up and was sent so many texts,” she wrote on Instagram Stories. “I would never insult my friends nor was it an insult. The comment was a reaction to the first slide on the page.”
She continued by explaining that the comment was tied to a friendly bet surrounding the game rather than any tension with Swift. “Second I bet my friends on the game. The friends in the text chain I posted. I lost but was poking at my opponents, my friends.”
Gomez also pushed back against assumptions that her social circle revolves exclusively around a handful of public friendships. “Believe it or not I do have other friends in my life. But quickly forget that most assume otherwise,” she added.
The singer concluded her statement with a reminder that the situation was far less serious than some online reactions suggested. “also .. It’s a basketball game.”
