SZA has shared that she was recently formally diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), offering fans a deeply personal insight into how she experiences the world. The Grammy-winning singer revealed the news through Instagram, where she reflected on her diagnosis with her signature humor while connecting it to aspects of her personality that fans have long noticed.

Posting a screenshot from her clinical evaluation, SZA wrote: “Finally took the time n got formally diagnosed .. asbergers / high functioning autism / smarter than u n— so stop playing in my face cause pattern recognition told me and I WILL get to the bottom if it thanks. pretty sure this is why I’m taking Ai so personally btw lol. And also why I’m in every comment section.”

Her post quickly sparked widespread conversation online, with many fans praising the singer for speaking openly about receiving a diagnosis later in life.

The clinical summary she shared identifies her diagnosis as Autism Spectrum Disorder while noting several characteristics, including significant sensory sensitivities to clothing, sound, taste and touch. It also describes her tendency to rely on strong coping mechanisms to “pass” or mask in social settings, something that can become mentally exhausting and contribute to anxiety.

Although SZA referenced “Asperger’s” and “high-functioning autism” in her caption, current medical guidelines classify both under the broader diagnosis of Autism Spectrum Disorder. Asperger’s syndrome was removed from the DSM-5 in 2013, while “high-functioning autism” remains an informal term rather than an official diagnosis.

The revelation follows recent online discussion surrounding one of SZA’s concert interactions, where she criticized a fan’s iPhone use while referencing conflict minerals. After sharing her diagnosis, she jokingly connected that moment to what she described as heightened pattern recognition, suggesting it influences how she processes information and why she often engages directly with discussions online.
