Tate McRae continues to keep her fans guessing on the Miss Possessive Tour, this time by paying tribute to one of her biggest influences. During a soundcheck in Atlanta on September 9, the Canadian pop star performed a heartfelt cover of “Breathin” by Ariana Grande, showcasing her vocal versatility.
The stripped-back performance came as part of the VIP experience before the show and quickly spread online through fan clips. The moment also carried extra meaning, as it followed the pair’s recent interaction at the 2025 MTV Video Music Awards, where Grande picked up multiple trophies, including Video of the Year for “Brighter Days Ahead.”

The cover is the latest in a string of special soundcheck performances that have become a tradition on McRae’s tour. Fans attending VIP sessions often get to hear unreleased tracks, rare acoustic versions, or McRae’s takes on other artists’ hits. In Europe earlier this year, she surprised audiences with renditions of Billie Eilish and The Kid LAROI, but her choice of “Breathin” hit especially hard for longtime pop fans who recall the song’s chart success.
Released in 2018, Grande’s “Breathin” became a fan favorite from her fourth studio album, Sweetener. The track debuted at No. 22 on the Billboard Hot 100 before climbing to a peak of No. 12, spending 25 weeks on the chart.
McRae’s tour itself has been a landmark moment in her career. After a sold-out European run, the North American leg launched on August 4 at Vancouver’s Rogers Arena with two back-to-back shows. The 22-year-old has been performing to packed arenas night after night, debuting new outfits and a refreshed setlist that includes her latest single, “Just Keep Watching,” performed live for the first time.
The Miss Possessive Tour supports McRae’s third studio album, So Close to What, which debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 earlier this year, marking one of the biggest opening weeks of 2025. With more than 80 shows across Europe, North America, and South America, the tour is set to wrap in November.
