The Kid LAROI is addressing one of the most persistent myths surrounding his breakout hit “STAY.” During a recent Twitch livestream, the Australian artist offered a clear and direct clarification about the song’s songwriting credits, confirming that only he and Justin Bieber wrote the lyrics to the chart-topping single.
“I wrote every single lyric on that song apart from Justin’s verse,” LAROI told viewers. “Justin wrote every lyric of his verse. There’s been some misinterpretation somewhere along the line that the song was pitched to us. People think Charlie wrote the song and gave it to us. That didn’t happen.” The statement puts to rest long-standing speculation about the origins of one of the most successful pop records of the 2020s.
According to LAROI, “STAY” was born organically in 2020 during a casual studio session at producer Blake Slatkin’s house. The gathering included Charlie Puth, Omer Fedi, and several collaborators. Puth played a melody on the keyboard that would later evolve into the song’s instantly recognizable hook.
Released on July 9, 2021, “STAY” served as the lead single from F*ck Love 3: Over You, the reloaded edition of LAROI’s mixtape. The track marked his second collaboration with Bieber, following “Unstable” from Bieber’s Justice album. Its impact was immediate and global.
“STAY” reached No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100, becoming LAROI’s first chart-topping single and Bieber’s eighth. The song spent seven non-consecutive weeks at the summit and also topped the Billboard Global 200.
