What’s the album about?

Abrams has described Daughter from Hell as a more introspective and emotionally layered project than anything she has released before.

Speaking on The Elvis Duran Show, she explained that the record explores broader questions about identity and existence rather than simply reacting to heartbreak.

“This album feels more existential to me… it’s a bit less reactive. It doesn’t feel like a big shift for me in terms of the style but it feels like we’re mining deeper.”

That emotional direction has also been echoed by producer Aaron Dessner, who called the project “the most moving and powerful work we have done together.”

Aaron Dessner says it’s their strongest collaboration yet

Dessner revealed that work on Daughter from Hell actually began nearly two years ago during sessions at Electric Lady Studios in New York, the same day Abrams recorded “That’s So True” and “I Told You Things.”

Recording later continued at Long Pond Studio, London, and additional sessions back at Electric Lady. According to Dessner, the album expands their creative partnership into “uncharted waters sonically,” while highlighting Abrams’ strongest songwriting to date.

The singles have already built major momentum

The rollout has produced two Billboard Hot 100 entries before release.

  • “Hit the Wall” peaked at No. 34 on the Billboard Hot 100.
  • “Look at My Life” debuted at No. 54 this week.

Abrams also previewed another track, “Good Reason,” in the days leading up to release, giving fans another glimpse of the album’s emotional direction.

Olivia Rodrigo already has a favorite song

Excitement surrounding the album increased after Olivia Rodrigo revealed that “Death Wish” is currently her favorite song from the project.

During Spotify’s Countdown To interview, Rodrigo praised the track’s writing, telling Abrams: “Every lyric feels so poignant. It feels like there are no filler lyrics in it—it’s just perfect.”

Fans have already heard much of the album live

On July 14, Abrams celebrated release week with a free one-night-only concert at New York City’s Bowery Ballroom. Opening with “Death Wish,” she performed much of Daughter from Hell for the first time. The intimate performance offered fans one final preview before the album’s official release.
