Jeongyeon has been an integral part of TWICE since the group’s debut in 2015, earning recognition for her distinctive voice, stage presence, and contributions to some of K-pop’s most successful releases. Over the years, she has also explored television hosting, songwriting, and other entertainment projects, building a career that extends well beyond her work as a member of the girl group. But how much do you really know about her journey?
Her road to becoming a K-pop idol was not immediate. Jeongyeon initially failed an audition for JYP Entertainment as a child, but she eventually passed another audition in 2010. After joining the company, she spent five years as a trainee. In 2014, she was expected to debut in a planned JYP girl group alongside Nayeon, Sana, and Jihyo, although the project was ultimately cancelled.
TWICE officially debuted in October 2015 with the EP The Story Begins and its lead single, “Like Ooh-Ahh.”
Following her debut, Jeongyeon expanded her activities beyond music. From July 2016 to January 2017, she co-hosted the television program Inkigayo alongside her older sister, Gong Seung-yeon. The two received the Newcomer Award at the 2016 SBS Entertainment Awards. Jeongyeon also earned recognition in Gallup Korea’s annual music poll, placing among South Korea’s 20 most popular idols for four consecutive years between 2016 and 2019.
