Ms. Lauryn Hill received one of the night’s highest honors at the 2026 BET Awards, accepting the inaugural Living Legend Icon Award during the ceremony on June 28 at the Peacock Theater in Los Angeles. The emotional moment celebrated her lasting influence on hip-hop, R&B, and Black culture while bringing together an all-star lineup to honor her legacy.
Presented by Ice Cube, the award recognized Hill’s groundbreaking career with the Fugees and her landmark 1998 solo album The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill, a project that continues to shape generations of artists nearly three decades after its release.
Before accepting the honor, BET assembled one of the evening’s most memorable tributes. SZA, Doechii, Tems, Tierra Whack, Doja Cat, Nas, Queen Latifah, Common, Rapsody, Lizzo, and Hill’s children, including YG Marley and Zion Marley, performed songs from her celebrated catalog. Hill then surprised the audience by taking the stage herself for a powerful rendition of “Ex-Factor.”
During her acceptance speech, Hill reflected on the responsibility that comes with creating meaningful art and remaining true to one’s vision, even when it challenges audiences.
“As artists, we put ourselves in places and in situations where we have to say things that aren’t always comfortable. But we understand that people will understand later.”
Her remarks resonated throughout the venue, emphasizing the long-term impact of authentic storytelling over immediate approval.
The Living Legend Icon Award was introduced as one of four new honors added to the BET Awards this year, alongside the Fashion Vanguard Award, Pulse Award, and Icon of the Year Award. Hill became its first-ever recipient, joining an elite group of honorees that also included Teyana Taylor, who received the Icon of the Year Award, and veteran music executive Sylvia Rhone, honored with the Ultimate Icon Award.
The 2026 BET Awards also celebrated the year’s biggest achievements across music and entertainment. Clipse won Album of the Year for Let God Sort Em Out, while Kehlani earned Best Female R&B/Pop Artist and Video of the Year for “Folded.” Cardi B added another Best Female Hip Hop Artist trophy to her collection, Leon Thomas claimed Best Male R&B/Pop Artist, and Mariah the Scientist won the Viewer’s Choice Award for “Burning Blue.”
