Megan Thee Stallion, born Megan Jovon Ruth Pete on February 15, 1995, in San Antonio, Texas, is one of the most influential artists in modern hip-hop. Beyond her bold lyrics and commanding stage presence, the Grammy-winning rapper has always been a strong advocate for women’s empowerment. Recently, she has redefined what it means to be a female rapper in the industry by taking the bold step of going independent. Her third studio album, Megan, was released through her own Hot Girl label in partnership with Warner Music. The result is an album that has been widely acclaimed, spawning hit singles such as “Boa” and “Mamushi” and reaching the top three on the Billboard 200. Over the years, Megan has delivered numerous successful songs, from “Savage” to “WAP.” But before she became a Grammy-winning artist, she was just a tall, confident young woman from Houston, Texas, who turned a childhood nickname into an iconic stage name.

How She Got Her Name

Megan Thee Stallion’s stage name reflects both her physical stature and Southern roots. Growing up, she stood 5 feet 10 inches tall, and in the Southern United States, the term stallion is often used to describe tall and curvy women. The nickname stuck, and she first used it as a social media handle before fully embracing it as her official artist name. The addition of Thee adds emphasis, highlighting her confidence, power, and presence in the music world.

Since making her breakthrough, Megan Thee Stallion has achieved remarkable success. In 2021, she became the first female rapper since Lauryn Hill to win Best New Artist at the Grammy Awards. She also won Best Rap Performance and Best Rap Song for her collaboration with Beyoncé on “Savage (Remix).” Her hit songs, including “Hot Girl Summer,” “Savage,” “WAP” (with Cardi B), and “Body,” have dominated the charts and defined a new era of female empowerment in rap. As mentioned above, Megan’s influence extends far beyond her music. She coined the term Hot Girl Summer, which became a cultural movement promoting self-confidence, independence, and living life unapologetically. Additionally, in 2021, she graduated from Texas Southern University with a degree in health administration, proving that success in music didn’t stop her from pursuing higher education.
