Happy birthday to Dove Cameron! The talented actress and singer turns 30 today. It’s been a long way since she made a name for herself in the Disney Channel comedy series Liv and Maddie. Since those days, Dove has received growing recognition not only for her acting roles but also for her musical talent, lending her voice to soundtrack albums for Liv and Maddie first, and Descendants then. In 2018, she signed a recording deal with Disruptor Records and started her music career by releasing the debut singles “Bloodshot” and “Waste.” Fast forward to 2023, Dove dropped her debut studio album “Alchemical: Volume 1,” but there are no longer any traces of her first releases. So, what happened, and why did she delete her first eight songs?

Debut EP and First Songs (All Deleted)

Back in September 2019, Dove Cameron, then a 22-year-old, released a two-track EP featuring her debut singles “Bloodshot” and “Waste.” At the time, she described the songs to Billboard, saying, “What I love about ‘Bloodshot’ is that it’s not necessarily about a breakup, but it is definitely about a loss of some kind.” On the other hand, “Waste” is very much about that feeling of being so messed up over someone that you just want to waste yourself on them.

Just a couple of months after the release of her debut EP, Dove returned with another single titled “So Good.” At the time, she revealed that the song was one of her favorites and described it as a “feel-good track with an edge.” Along with the song, she also released an accompanying music video, in which she’s on a rotating platform. The clip was deleted from her YouTube channel two years ago.

Before the end of 2019, Dove unveiled also her fourth single “Out of Touch.” With this song, she announced the beginning of her new music era.

In early 2020, she released her first collaboration, titled “Remember Me.” The song, produced by The Futuristics, features rapper BIA. That year Dove dropped just another song, titled “We Belong.”

In 2021, the award-winning singer released “LazyBaby,” the eighth and last before removing all her works from digital platforms. “LazyBaby” became her first solo song to enter an official music chart, peaking at No. 32 on the New Zealand Hot Singles Chart. Despite the song revolving around a breakup, Dove stated that it wasn’t a breakup song but instead a ‘breakthrough song.’

‘Boyfriend,’ Deleted Songs, and ‘Alchemical’

On February 11, 2022, Dove released what would have become her breakout song, “Boyfriend.” The song quickly went viral on TikTok and earned her the first Billboard Hot 100 entry, peaking at No. 16. “Boyfriend” marked Dove’s first step into her new musical era, so she decided to delete all of her previous songs. In an interview with PopBuzz, the 30-year-old star explained what had pushed her to make this decision: “I very strongly feel like I finally know who I am authentically,” she revealed. “I finally feel like I’m the person who I have always known myself to be privately, but now I get to be that person publicly.” She also added that her previous creations didn’t represent her as the person she is. This feeling ultimately led her to remove from digital markets and platforms her previously released songs and focus more on a ‘fresh start.’
