Copper Lungs is a pop-rock band whose foundation lies in friendship. Bandmates Liam and Darren began jamming together during high school, where they were heavily influenced by iconic bands like Taking Back Sunday, My Chemical Romance, and Green Day, sparking their passion for music. As they continued to grow as a group, their love for performing and recording shaped their unique sound. The band’s name, Copper Lungs, came from a memorable video featuring Sam from Twin Atlantic and was humorously finalized with the help of the periodic table, leading them to “Copper.”
Recently, Copper Lungs released their new single, “Pieces of Me.” This powerful pop-rock anthem, written by Darren, conveys themes of support and resilience, with lyrics drawn from personal experiences that he hopes will resonate with listeners. “Pieces of Me” is part of their upcoming debut album, which the band describes as their most honest and emotionally raw work to date.
In an exclusive interview with InMusic, the band reflects on their journey, influences, and what fans can expect from their new music.
What inspired you to form a band and pursue a career in music together?
Music has always been a massive part of our lives. Liam and I started jamming in the high school music classrooms when we were about 13, and our love for playing music came from that. I’d say the early emo phase really is what got us into music. Bands like Taking Back Sunday, My Chemical Romance, and Green Day are where it all started for us at a young age. This progressed every year until we started playing gigs and recording music in a studio, and we fell in love with the entire process.
How did you choose your band name, and does it hold any special significance for you?
There is an old video of Sam from Twin Atlantic playing at King Tut’s in Glasgow, and he has the word “Lungs” written across his chest.
I was really obsessed with them during their rise to greatness, so this stuck in my head. We knew we wanted a second word in the name, and one day we found a picture of the periodic table and picked the first element that jumped out at us, which was Copper! The significance behind the name is really just that. We laugh at how ridiculous the process was to land on Copper Lungs!
Can you tell us about your new single “Pieces of Me”?
“Pieces of Me” is a hard-hitting pop-rock anthem that we feel is one of our more direct songs. It’s a combination of all the things we’ve loved about music in the past, but brought forward to our newer musical direction, with more depth and meaning behind the song. We love songs that hit hard live, and every time we’ve played “Pieces of Me,” it does just that. So, we knew it would be a good one. We’re bad about saying this about every song, but this one is actually one of my favourite tracks we’ve ever written. It was actually a total fluke! The album was already written, and one day I was restringing my guitar and wrote this track in about an hour. I sent it to the boys, and we just knew it had to be in there and be the next track we show everyone.
What is the meaning behind this song?
I (Darren) wrote the song focusing on what it means in life to me to have someone who’s there to support me through the good, the bad, and the ugly. I really try nowadays to talk about things that are personal to me, but in a way that others can still relate to. There might not be huge specifics in the lyrics, but to me, I know the exact moments, feelings, and experiences that are tied to every single word. I think a lot of the time, people are scared to talk about things that scare and excite them. Through our songs, I feel like they’re becoming almost an expressive diary of the things I live through day to day, and I think that’s really cool. They will mean something now, and in years to come, I can look back on them and think about all these times in my life.
This new single marks a new chapter for the band, pushing your boundaries musically. What excites you the most about the direction Copper Lungs is taking?
We’re just not scared to write what we want, despite the years of pressure from an ever-evolving and moving music industry.
Sometimes you get caught up in the trends, but right now, we are just writing music and telling our stories through these songs, and it’s the happiest we’ve ever been writing music. These new songs are us in our most raw form—just making tunes together, enjoying life, and hopefully, other people will like them as well.
Looking ahead, what can fans expect from your upcoming album?
Raw and real emotional stories, coupled with massive catchy hooks, backed by powerful, hard-hitting drums layered with guitars and synths.
Our new songs are the best tracks we’ve ever put out there, and they are the most real demonstration of us as people and musicians. We love them, and we hope other people will as well!
We know there are some songs in here that will definitely be getting stuck in people’s heads, and also, hopefully, helping them through anything they can relate to. If we can achieve any of these points, we will be happy with the outcome!
