Los Angeles-based duo Donnie Brightko, made up of Katie from Michigan and Laney from Rhode Island, are reviving the nostalgic pop vibes of the early 2000s with their debut single, “Take Me Home (Shut Up).” Describing their musical style as Y2K-era Nostalgic Pop, the duo draws inspiration from iconic artists like Katy Perry, Miley Cyrus, and Charli xcx, blending pulsating basslines, punchy drums, and sweet synths into a sound that captures the carefree, fun spirit of the early 2000s, all while incorporating modern, electronic-driven production.
Released on July 19th, “Take Me Home (Shut Up)” is a confident and cheeky anthem that explores the undeniable chemistry between two people who are ready to take their relationship to the next level.
The duo recently sat down with InMusic to introduce their debut single and hinted at what’s next, teasing their upcoming release.
How would you define your music?
We draw inspiration from the early 00’s era of bubblegum pop…think Katy Perry’s “Teenage Dream” Miley Cyrus’ “Bangerz” album and Charli XCX’s “Boom Clap.”
Can you tell us about your new single “Take Me Home (Shut Up)”?
This is our debut single! It features pulsating basslines, punchy drums, and sweet synths— very electronic-driven with production done by Los Angeles production duo B.K.L.A. Our song soundtracks the urge two people with undeniable chemistry have to “stop overthinking and just take me home”.
What is the meaning behind this song?
Take me Home (Shut Up) is a tongue-in-cheek confirmation of consensual desire between two people who need to take their relationship to the next level. The demanding yet cheeky lyrics present the female in the position of control over their crush’s actions, capturing a woman-empowering stance wrapped in the fun and nonchalant vibe of a hedonistic night out!
What’s your favorite line of the song, and why?
We love in the second verse when there’s the suggestion “can we skip to the next part // I’ll be waiting for you there” with the implied foreshadowing that these two have already taken each other home for the night before it’s even happened!
“Take Me Home (Shut Up)” is your debut single, are you excited for the start of your career?
We are so excited to keep releasing music together. We’re best friends who have been writing music together for over a decade! It was about time we released music on our own as a fun project!
Looking ahead, can you give us any hints or teasers about what you’re currently working on?
Yes! This last track had “Shut Up” in the title but our next single may be requesting the opposite action to occur, we may want them to…*clears throat* *ahem*…”Say It.”
