In this interview, we gain insightful access to the artistic journey of KATESELV, a talented Ukrainian musician currently based in Kyiv. Originating from Zaporizhzhia, KATESELV’s music blends various genres, including pop, pop-rock, electronic, indie, jazz-pop, and acoustic. She describes her music as an “antidepressant,” aiming to uplift listeners with its romantic, danceable, and upbeat vibes. She writes and sings in both Ukrainian and English, approaching songwriting with an intuitive mindset, letting the language—whether Ukrainian or English—flow naturally from her inspiration.
KATESELV’s musical journey began with a profound influence from Michael Jackson. “I’ve been a huge fan of his music since my very early years,” she says. Although she’s focused on releasing singles rather than a full album at the moment, her growing catalog already offers a rich listening experience. Through her music, KATESELV hopes to inspire listeners to explore deeper meanings of happiness, love, and fulfillment. As she hints at upcoming projects that promise to be nostalgic, deep, and comforting, KATESELV shares some insights into her music with InMusic.
How would you define your music?
I define my music as a kind of an antidepressant. I want my listeners to get positive vibes while listening to my music. My music has mainly a romantic, dancing and upbeat mood. With my lyrics I want to inspire people, to make them feel romantic, energetic and brave. After listening to my music I want them to be on a higher mood level. I want to bring them to higher frequencies.
How do you approach songwriting differently when creating in Ukrainian versus English?
I approach songwriting the same in Ukrainian and English. I just follow my intuition and my inner voice. If I have some inspiration in English, the song will be in English, and vice versa. For me it is very important to convey the original, genuine idea.
Which artist inspires you the most, and who would you like to collaborate with in the future?
My first and greatest musical impression – was Michael Jackson. I’ve been a huge fan of his music since my very early years. I just love collaborating with people and exchanging energy and experiencing. So I am very open to any collaboration as long as there’s mutual ideas and openness.
You have released many singles so far. Are you planning to release an album?
I’m not planning to release an album in the nearest future, for now I’m more focused on singles. But I can say that I already kinda have an album, because I’ve released many songs, and they make the duration of an album, so I believe my listeners can enjoy it.
Do you have a favorite song among the ones you have released so far?
Each of my original songs are so special to me. It really feels like “To be a parent for your songs”, it’s just impossible to pick one and say it’s the best. They have different energy, and different vibe. But as for vibes, I have two songs that resonate with my current state. They are – Make them feel love. The manifestation song, its credo – the more you give, the more you get. The song is about exchanging positive energy and spreading love, because this is the way human beings progress, that’s what makes us special. And Мені тебе подарували In this song I bow to the greatness of love. The song is filled with romantic, upbeat, playful and spring vibes. (I hope one day I’ll get a chance to play this song with an orchestra!)
Looking ahead, can you give us any hints or teasers about what you’re currently working on?
I’m currently working hard on my next releases. I have big plans and am working on them! As for hints, I can say that future releases will vary greatly. It will be in someway nostalgic, deep, pure and comforting! 🙂
What is a message you would like to give through your music, and why?
My main goal in music is to make listeners think about their own happiness. To make them think about it and start looking for things that can make them truly happy. To inspire them to search for deeper meanings of happiness, love and fulfillment.
