Born in England, raised in the US, and now back in the UK, Katy Hurt roots her music in Americana and Country genres with a touch of Rock. She has shaped her unique sound by drawing inspiration from the likes of Sheryl Crow and John Mayer.
Katy kicked off her career in 2016 with her debut single, “Love You More.” Since then, she has released a string of successful singles and EPs, achieving remarkable accolades such as winning the UK Country Music Spotlight Awards for Female Vocalist of the Year, Best EP, Best Song, and Best Video. Additionally, her singles “Sounds Good in a Bar” and “Wish I Could Give You Up” both reached the top spot on the UK iTunes charts.
Earlier this month, Katy released her brand new single, “Oh Girl.” She revealed that the song was inspired by one of her closest friends and serves as a “reminder that sometimes it’s okay to let people in and let go of the pain you’ve been holding onto.” Katy is now gearing up to release her new album, with “Oh Girl” being the final song she wrote for it.
In her exclusive interview with InMusic, Katy explores the themes behind “Oh Girl” and discusses what fans can expect from her forthcoming album.
How would you define your music?
It’s difficult for me to say but it’s been described as an intersection between Dolly Parton, The Eagles and Sheryl Crow.
Your music blends country and Americana. What specific influences shape your sound?
I grew up loving the really old crooner country, artists like Patsy Cline and Jim Reeves. As I got older I realised that good songs come from all sorts of places so I’ve been influenced by artists outside just Country like Sheryl Crow, Journey, John Mayer and so many others.
Can you tell us about your new single “Oh Girl”? What is the meaning behind this song?
Oh Girl was inspired by a close friend of mine who was really struggling and I wanted it to be a reminder that sometimes it’s okay to let people in and let go of the pain you’ve been holding onto. It was co-written with Murray Pulver, Rhianna Rae Saj and Gab Zspaka back in 2020.
Your new album is coming soon, what can we expect from it?
You can expect to get to know me better. I think this album really covers all the different aspects of what I’m capable of as an artist. There are some really fun moments on the record for rocking out and there are some good old sad songs about life, love and everything in between.
“Oh Girl” was the last song written for your upcoming album. What made you realize it was the final piece of the puzzle?
Well it was the last song we wrote for the album, we actually finished it the day before we went in to start tracking. I think I just realised that it was an important message to both myself and hopefully to others that it’s okay to step back and see the big picture and give yourself a little forgiveness. I didn’t have another song like that on the album and I felt like it was something that we couldn’t ignore.
What is a message you would like to give through your music and why?
Worry less and enjoy the little things… that’s all we ever have!!
