Born to Nigerian parents and raised in Canada, Zïbuwa’s multicultural background is evident in her unique musical style, which blends elements of R&B, Neo-Soul, and Jazz with Afrocentric rhythms. Starting in the church choir at a young age and discovering theater in high school, she developed a deep love for music and composition. Although she initially pursued a degree in Social Work, her passion for music led her to drop out and follow her dream. Her journey has culminated in the release of her debut EP, “Full Circle.” Released on June 13th, the project delves into the depths of the human experience, capturing moments of vulnerability, growth, and transformation. In this interview with InMusic, Zïbuwa shares insights into her musical journey, the inspirations behind her new EP, and her message of perseverance and following one’s dreams.
How would you define your music?
A place where I can be free to fully express myself, experiment with new ideas and create a community for myself.
Could you elaborate on your musical journey and the path that led you to where you are today?
My journey started in the church. I used to sing in the choir till I was 12 years old. When I got to High School, I discovered theater and was doing musicals for the first few years. My love for music and composition grew, at the age of 16 I started writing songs. Drifted away from my passion of music to study Social Work. a year and a half into my degree, unsatisfied with what I was doing, I decided to drop out of college and pursue music. Connected with some musicians and created my first single called “Blind”. From there, I started working on my now released ep called “Full Circle”.
Can you tell us about your new EP “Full Circle”?
Starting the EP off, “Patterns”, paints a vivid portrait of two souls entwined by parallel struggles, unraveling the complexities of witnessing a partner spiral into familiar yet detrimental ways of coping. The song’s melody mirrors the parallel narratives of both protagonists as they navigate the labyrinth of their shared struggles. Following into the next track, “Reality Check” reveals a deeply relatable narrative— the awakening to unequal emotional investments, to pouring one’s heart into a partnership while realizing that it is not reciprocated. The 3rd track, “Let Me Breathe” mirrors the emotional journey of shedding old skins and embracing newfound strength. The lyrics narrate the struggle of peoples warped perception and of one’s truth. The last song on the EP unveils an emotional journey of triumph over fear, painting a vivid picture of casting aside trepidations and boldly embracing uncharted territories. As the song unfolds, it illuminates a perspective that regardless of the challenges encountered, there’s a grand design at play. “Plan For Me” stands as a melodic testament to this unshakeable faith.
What is the meaning behind this project?

“Full Circle” is your debut EP, are you excited for the start of your career?
Yes I am! Full Circle was created about a year ago. I have grown so much as an artist. I am beyond excited to show the world what’s next and to keep incorporating all the things that inspire me.
Can you give us any hints or teasers about what you’re currently working on?
Yes of course! I am currently on my next ep. It will be more in the realm of Neo Soul. If everything goes to plan, It should be out this fall.
What is a message you would like to give through your music and why?
The message in my music will always change depending on the season I am in. Overall, I want the people who listen to my music to know that hardwork and perseverance pays off. Following your dreams is the best thing you can do for yourself. No matter who does/doesn’t believe in you, if you believe in yourself and do the work to sharpen your craft, then things will work out.

I am always trying to push the boundary in my mind. I won’t always do the same style of music but rest assured I will always do the music that inspires me in the season that I am in. I strive to be better and inspire those who need it. Excited for what’s to come.
