One year after her breakthrough single “No Distance,” Téodora returns to discuss the transformations in her career and personal growth. The Romanian artist, who blends Balkan influences with R&B and electronic sounds, sat down with InMusic to reflect on how the past year has shaped her artistry and to introduce her latest single, “On Hold.”
When we last spoke, Téodora described her path as challenging and often overwhelming. Today, she reveals that she has developed a healthier relationship with her music and career. “A year ago, I was quite a workaholic,” she explains. “I always felt pressured to hit big numbers on social media and finish as many songs as possible.” Since then, she has embraced live performances with her band, explored new sounds, and taken a more experimental approach to her production process.
After “No Distance,” Téodora released three more singles, each showcasing her evolving sound. Over the past year, her music has shifted toward “a specific and authentic sound—ethereal music mixed with some dark R&B.” Her latest single, “On Hold,” captures this balance, blending urban elements like trap and pop with ethereal soundscapes.
In her new interview with InMusic, Téodora discusses how her music and life have changed over the past 12 months, sharing insights on her new single “On Hold.”
Last year, you mentioned being on a long and challenging road in your career. How has that journey evolved since we last spoke?
I am enjoying it now! A year ago I was quite a workaholic and that led to a very toxic relationship with my music work, I always felt a lot of pressure to get a lot of numbers on social media and many songs done!
I had a quick escape from London around Christmas, and that was a great break for me to just reflect and fall in love with music again. So, in the past year, I’ve been performing a lot live with my girls’ band, producing and creating my own music, and experimenting with my sound.
One year ago, you introduced us to your single, “No Distance.” How do you feel your music has evolved since then?
My music definitely has a specific and authentic sound to it now, ethereal music mixed with some dark R&B. I’ve released 3 more songs since then (Right Frequency, she wants me, On Hold) and if you listen to them you definitely get the vibe!
Can you tell us about your new single “On Hold”? What is the meaning behind this song?
My latest song, called “On Hold,” is a blend of urban (trap and pop) and ethereal sounds combined with an intimate message – “Put my life on hold”. The song expresses how a life partner can help you “pause” the ugly reality and make you feel fully present in the love-filled moment. I made the song with Tommy Ringlöw, a good friend and amazing producer, brainstorming music with him gets us great sounds!
“On Hold” conveys a deep message about finding someone who makes you feel fully present. Is there a particular experience or person who inspired this message?
Having a long-distance relationship is not for weak hearts! It is a very difficult journey you and your partner decide to go for, and it has its challenges. But the moment you see each other, it’s such a blessing, I totally forget about all my problems, my job, and my worries, and I only feel love and peace, just like all my day-to-day reality is taking a break. Because of these moments, we make our relationship work, because it’s a real feeling that also inspires me a lot in my art.
What’s next for Téodora? Are there any upcoming projects, collaborations, or performances that you’re excited to share with your fans?
I am planning a lot of songwriting and production sessions, to be active on the creative side and hopefully to make music for other artists in the near future!
As requested through my TikTok account, I will release a sped-up version of one of my songs – “she wants me”, the original version is already out on every streaming platform. I am still preparing live sets with my flute and my band for more gigs, and hopefully have more and more opportunities for live concerts in the upcoming year.
I am also getting back to my activity as a vocal coach which excites me a lot, I love sharing all my techniques and knowledge in music and performing.
In our first interview, you mentioned, ‘I avoid being a music writer with a clear message; I like it vague.’ Do you still feel the same way, or has your approach to songwriting changed since then?
I am quite open in my writing process now and I don’t want to think or be too rational in a session, what lyrics and message feel right in that moment that’s what I am using! Sure, being vague makes a song more relatable to a wide audience sometimes, but it really depends how I feel about that project, and how personal and specific I want it to be!
Is there anything else you’d like people to know?
I am still independent, with no manager, no label, so my main focus is to grow my community with the right people who vibe with my creativity!
