Ariana Grande’s Petal era begins tonight. The pop superstar will release “hate that i made you love me” at midnight as the lead single from her eighth studio album, with its official music video set to arrive Monday, June 1.
Anticipation has accelerated across the past week as Grande slowly revealed fragments of the song through cryptic lyric teases, posting lines including “cause i barely tried” and “And I can see right through” across social media.
Grande confirmed the song’s title in early May, calling it “one of my favorite songs i’ll ever write.” That alone raised expectations, but the production credits pushed excitement even further. “hate that i made you love me” was crafted by Grande alongside Max Martin and ILYA Salmanzadeh, the same creative trio responsible for some of the defining records from Sweetener, thank u, next, and Positions.
Those collaborations have consistently marked turning points in her catalog. From the precision-built emotional release of “no tears left to cry” to the sleek intimacy of “positions,” their partnership has often delivered some of Grande’s most commercially and critically potent work.
Questions about the album’s sonic direction intensified following a spontaneous fan interaction in New York on May 9, when Grande was asked whether petal would resemble Positions. Her answer was immediate: “no, but i love her.”
During an Instagram conversation earlier this spring, Grande characterized the record as “feral,” framing it as an emotional clearing-out. “It was kind of about breaking up with all kinds of negative attachments — things that no longer serve me,” she explained. “It’s definitely from a place that I have been maybe too shy or polite to tap into before.”
The album arrives July 31 via BabyDoll Music under exclusive license to Republic Records, landing just weeks after Grande launches her 41-date Eternal Sunshine Tour on June 6 in Oakland, with the run concluding September 1 in London.
