Nominations
Three artists are tied for the most nominations at this year’s Soul Train Awards. SZA, Usher, and Summer Walker are all up for nine categories. SZA and Summer Walker are both nominated for Album of the Year with “SOS” and “Clear 2: Soft Life EP,” respectively. SZA, born Solana Imani Rowe, has two songs nominated for Song of the Year: “Kill Bill” and “Snooze.”
21 Savage follows with eight nominations, including three songs in the Best Collaboration category.
Special Honors
Two special awards will be given out during the ceremony. Multi-platinum rapper and producer T-Pain will receive the Legend Award, while Janelle Monáe, known for hit singles like “Make Me Feel” and “We Are Young,” will be honored with the Spirit of Soul Award.
Records
Beyoncé, nominated for Best R&B/Soul Female Artist and Best Collaboration, can extend her record as the most awarded artist in Soul Train Awards history, currently steady at 25 wins.
Chris Brown could break the tie with Bruno Mars and become the most awarded male act if he wins in two categories, with three songs up for Best Dance Performance. On the other hand, if Usher wins six of the nine awards he’s nominated for, he will become the most awarded male artist in Soul Train Awards history.
Notably, SZA may end her long dry spell at the Soul Train Awards. The R&B star, in fact, won just two Soul Train Awards in 2017. Despite being nominated several times between 2018 and 2022, she failed to take home any awards.
Who Will Be the Host?
Keke Palmer will host the 2023 Soul Train Music Awards. The 30-year-old singer and actress will also perform during the night.
