Jay-Z’s legacy is once again proving timeless thanks to Cardi B. Since the release of her new single “Imaginary Playerz” on August 15, streams of Jay-Z’s “Imaginary Players” have surged +305% on Spotify in the United States. In particular, on August 14, the song logged just over 13,000 streams, but the following day, when Cardi released “Imaginary Playerz,” it gathered nearly 30,000 streams. The 1997 track, originally featured on Jay-Z’s sophomore album In My Lifetime, Vol. 1, has long been a fan-favorite for its sharp wordplay and luxury rap bravado.

Cardi’s “Imaginary Playerz” serves as the second single from her upcoming album Am I the Drama?, due September 19, 2025. The Bronx rapper made it clear that the homage wasn’t casual—she sought Jay-Z’s approval directly before moving forward. “If he didn’t approve … I just had to come a little bit harder,” she said in a recent interview, confirming that Jay not only cleared the sample but also loved the final product.

The direct lyrical parallels showcase how the song works as both tribute and evolution: Jay-Z’s “Yo, dog, what’s the difference between a 4.0 and a 4.6?” becomes Cardi’s “You b****** don’t even know the difference between vintage and archive, like.” His “You beer money, I’m all year money, I’m ‘Papi, you ain’t got to count it, it’s all there’ money” transforms into her “Their money my stocks-and-share money / Your booking fee is my makeup-and-hair money.” Each flip is less imitation and more reinterpretation. Despite the buzz around Cardi’s version, the song seems to struggle on Spotify. On its opening day, “Imaginary Playerz” received 720,000 streams globally and has since decreased, with a cumulative total of 1,300,000 streams to date. On the other hand, the song quickly soared to the top spot on US iTunes.
