Chappell Roan has responded to the online debate surrounding her headline-making look at the 68th Annual Grammy Awards. She addressed the conversation directly in a new Instagram post. The pop sensation, who attended the ceremony as a nominee, appeared unfazed by the polarized reaction to her red carpet appearance.

Giggling because I don’t even think this is THAT outrageous of an outfit,” Roan wrote. “The look’s actually so awesome and weird. I recommend just exercising your free will. It’s really fun and silly.”

Her comments arrived after hours of intense discourse across social media. During this time, her ensemble was alternately praised as daring performance art and criticized as excessive. The dress itself was a custom Mugler gown designed by creative director Miguel Castro Freitas. It was created in collaboration with Roan’s longtime stylist Genesis Webb. The look drew direct inspiration from Mugler’s Spring/Summer 1998 “Jeu de Paume” collection.

Constructed from sheer garnet silk georgette, the negligee-style gown featured fabric suspended from crystal-embellished rings. Additionally, prosthetic nipples were used both structurally and theatrically. A matching maroon cape completed the silhouette.

Roan was nominated for Record of the Year and Best Pop Solo Performance for “The Subway.” Later in the night, she changed into a cream one-shoulder Rodarte gown with bold cut-outs. She wore this look to present the Best New Artist award, which went to Olivia Dean.
