Charli xcx is embracing the discourse surrounding “Rock Music.” Days after releasing the lead single from her upcoming seventh studio album, the British pop innovator addressed the polarized reactions online, comparing the conversation to the early criticism once directed at PC Music and even her own Vroom Vroom era.
Writing through her secondary Instagram account, b.sides, Charli reflected on how audiences have interpreted the track’s title, humor, and broader artistic intent. “Seeing all the different reactions to my song rock music has been really interesting,” she wrote. “My friends and i have been discussing how in ways it reminds us of the initial discourse around pc music.”
She continued by referencing the way the influential collective was once perceived by critics and listeners. “The label was deemed as almost critiquing or looking down on pop music or something, and there was an element of that with vroom vroom too when that ep came out. it’s all kind of fascinating.”
Released on May 8, 2026, “Rock Music” immediately sparked conversation across social media due to its title and intentionally contradictory framing. Despite the name, the song is not a traditional rock record. Instead, the A. G. Cook and Finn Keane-produced single leans heavily into hyperpop textures, fragmented synth production, and self-aware lyricism.
Charli has repeatedly leaned into that ambiguity throughout the rollout. Earlier this month, she posted a studio clip teasing the track while jokingly clarifying: “A video of me making a song called ‘rock music’ that is not actually rock music which is funny because i never said i was making a rock album. love you xx.”
The debate intensified because of comments she made earlier this year while discussing her next creative direction. In an April interview with British Vogue, Charli previewed the lyric “I think the dance floor is dead, so now we’re making rock music,” later explaining that returning immediately to another club-focused album “would have felt really hard, really sad.”
