Charli XCX’s “Sympathy Is a Knife” has seen a massive boost in streams amid speculation that Taylor Swift took aim at her on The Life of a Showgirl. According to updated Spotify data, the track was up 355% on October 3, climbing to 500,000 daily streams.
The sudden spike follows days of online debate surrounding Swift’s new song “Actually Romantic.” Fans believe the pop superstar alludes to Charli XCX in the track’s cutting lyrics: “I heard you call me ‘Boring Barbie’ when the coke’s got you brave / High-fived my ex and then you said you’re glad he ghosted me.” The reference to Swift’s ex and the “Boring Barbie” line led many to connect the dots to Charli, who previously opened for Swift on her 2018 Reputation Stadium Tour.

The rumored tension between Swift and Charli dates back to Charli’s 2019 remarks about touring with “The Fate of Ophelia” singer, where she said opening for her “felt like playing to five-year-olds.” Though she later clarified that the quote was taken out of context and expressed gratitude for the opportunity, the comment became a lingering pop-culture talking point.
The discussion resurfaced in 2024 when Charli released her acclaimed album Brat. On the track “Sympathy Is a Knife,” she sings, “Don’t wanna see her backstage at my boyfriend’s shows,” a line many fans interpreted as a subtle reference to Swift — who briefly dated The 1975 frontman Matty Healy, Charli’s longtime collaborator.
Now, over a year later, Swift’s new lyrics appear to be reigniting the speculation. As a result, Charli’s Brat era has seen a renewed wave of attention, with “Sympathy Is a Knife” quickly climbing back onto several streaming charts.
