In her interview with Glamour, Christina also reflected on her career, opening up about feeling restricted during her first album era. She explained that she didn’t enjoy the “bubblegum” pop image that was expected of her at the time. “I didn’t love the bubblegum thing, where you had to play a virgin but not act like one,” she said. Christina admitted that performing hits like “Genie in a Bottle,” “What a Girl Wants,” and “Come On Over Baby (All I Want Is You)” left her feeling creatively unfulfilled. She also discussed her groundbreaking album Stripped and the backlash it received, emphasizing that the album was a significant part of her journey to embrace and express her sexuality. “I think it was just a matter of believing so wholeheartedly in my vision, which was to fight for sexuality,” she said.
