Ariana Grande has officially performed “petal” live for the first time. During her Eternal Sunshine Tour stop at Montreal’s Centre Bell on July 28, the pop superstar debuted the title track from her upcoming eighth studio album, giving fans an exclusive preview just three days before the record arrives on Friday, July 31.
Anticipation had already reached a fever pitch after fans outside the venue heard Grande rehearsing the song during soundcheck earlier in the day. Once the lights went down, the singer delivered the full live debut onstage, prompting an immediate eruption from the sold-out crowd as one of the most anticipated songs of the petal era finally made its concert premiere.
The empowering track introduces Pepper, Ariana Grande’s fictional alter ego, an aspiring performer navigating auditions, rejection and self-doubt while refusing to lose sight of her ambitions. The character has become central to the album’s visual campaign, appearing throughout teasers for the accompanying music video directed by Christian Breslauer.
Montreal wasn’t only treated to the live debut of “petal.” Grande also surprised concertgoers with the first a cappella performance of “worst behavior” on the Eternal Sunshine Tour, adding another unexpected moment to an already memorable night.
Earlier on Tuesday, the Ariana Grande unveiled one final teaser for the “petal” music video ahead of its release. Shot in the cinematic VistaVision format, the black-and-white preview opens inside a vintage Hollywood studio before introducing Pepper with the line, “I’m Pepper. I’m here for the audition today.” The receptionist responds, “You and everyone else, honey. Take an application, pick a number, get online,” reinforcing fan theories that the visual satirizes the entertainment industry’s relentless search for the next marketable star.
Those themes have been developing throughout the album rollout. Previous teasers featured a casting office advertising for “new faces who can follow direction and have a good personality,” while Ariana Grande has consistently expanded the story through content released on the 8th, 18th and 28th of each month.
Commercial expectations are already soaring. petal has surpassed 3 million Spotify pre-saves, while lead single “hate that i made you love me” debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100, becoming Grande’s 10th career chart-topper.
